Dust ruffles is a piece of cloth that runs along the bottom perimeter of a bed. While a dust ruffles serves largely as a decorative piece, it also help prevents dust from collecting beneath the bed.
A dust ruffles may be used on any size bed, including on a crib. Regardless of the bed it is used on, the dust ruffles should match the comforter and pillowcases. In some cases, the dust ruffles may also be designed to match the curtains used in the bedroom. Dust ruffles may be attached to a bed in several ways. Dust ruffles may also simply wrap around the bed and connect with itself at one location, though it can be difficult to obtain a tight fit with this type of dust ruffles.
Another variation of the dust ruffles makes use of Velcro. When pushed together, the Velcro pieces help hold the dust ruffles in place. This type of dust ruffles was most popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
How to Make a Dust Ruffles

- Step 1
Select your fabric. Avoid strong diagonal prints as they can fool the eye making the dust ruffles look crooked.
- Step 2
Measure around the three sides of your bed, excluding the side behind the headboard. Add four inches. Add two inches for the hem.
- Step 3
Cut the exact measurements from your fabric for a straight, form-fitting dust ruffles. If you do, each time you cut a separate piece, add two inches to seam the pieces together.
- Step 4
Sew the strips together with a 1-inch seam and press the seam open with an iron. Make the bottom hem by folding the fabric over 1/2-inch and seaming, then folding it another inch and sewing for a finished hem. Make a small seam at each end of the dust ruffles by folding over 1/2-inch and sewing.
- Step 5
Cut 2-inch lengths of Velcro from the roll. Starting at the top of one side of the bed, hold the top seam to the top of the box spring. Peel the backing off the Velcro and apply the piece to the box springs. Peel the other side off and carefully fit your dust ruffle on.
- Step 6
Remove the dust ruffles from the bed, with half the Velcro tab attached and reinforce by sewing it on either with your machine or by hand. Now you have a beautiful ruffle that you can easily remove to launder
